The genome of C. quinoa

Recent publication of the complete Chenopodium quinoa genome (Nature, February 2017)
DOI: 10.1038/nature21370
Mark Tester and colleagues sequenced the genome of a Chilean coastal variety of quinoa along with the genomes of additional Chenopodium species to characterize quinoa's genetic diversity and understand the evolution of its genome. This work has been a collaborative effort from many groups and the project brought together 33 researchers from 4 continents coordinated from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST, Saudi Arabia). The data includes a high-quality reference genome assembly of the Chilean coastal accession PI614886 (also known as QQ74).

The authors hope that this resource will be a valuable asset to help accelerate research in quinoa. To understand the challenges associated to the quinoa genome sequence, we can develop a dialogue from the three following questions:
  • Can and how this new â??resourceâ? will assist genetic improvement and breeding strategy efforts for quinoa with the potential to enhance global food security?
  • What are the limits, the risks and the opportunities?
  • What are the next steps to bring the gap from innovation to farmers' needs?

The shared space below is decated for co-writing. One objective of this dialogue could be to develop from all inputs a response to Nature from our perspective.
